State wants more data from Holcim on tire-burning

Holcim Inc. received notice from the Montana Department of Environmental Quality on June 28 that its application to burn tires for fuel was again incomplete.

The cement manufacturing company has until Aug. 2 to answer several questions outlined by DEQ, most of which focus on a lack of information regarding the human health risks associated with burning tires.

"I haven't heard anything about them wanting to extend the deadline," said Mark Peterson, an environmental engineer with the DEQ. "As far as I know, they are working to address the comments."

Holcim representatives could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon. Since originally submitting an application for an air quality permit on Oct. 3, the company has provided additional information at the request of the DEQ three times.

The last package of information was completed May 31. After reviewing it, the department found the application was still lacking important test data.

"They have some work to do, that's for sure," Peterson said.

He sent Holcim a letter with more than five pages of requests for further information or explanation.
