War protesters 'die' along Main Street

Screaming and pretending to writhe in pain, a group of about six war protesters Tuesday afternoon "died" repeatedly at busy intersections along Main Street.

Participants in the theatrical form of war resistance painted their faces to look bloody and carried "stop war" signs.

"We oppose war because it is unjust," said Angel Drobnica, a member of the Bozeman Collective, the group that organized the protest. "We support life and in that respect we support the soldiers."

The group had planned for the protest to take place inside the Gallatin Valley Mall near the entrance to JC Penney Co.

But when the first two protesters arrived, they were greeted by about a half-dozen Bozeman Police officers along with mall security.

Sgt. Jason Becker told the protesters the mall is private property. He made them aware of the consequences of causing a disturbance inside the mall and said they were welcome to take the protest to the sidewalk, as long as they did not block traffic.

Mall owner John Morrow said he had been expecting a much larger group of protesters than actually showed up.

He said his issue with their presence was not political. He just didn't want them to disrupt business.

Rather than risk arrest, the group moved the protest outside.

"The point isn't to get arrested for this action," said Deb VanPoolen, a supporter who acted as a witness for the group. "The point is to bring attention to the people dying."
