Chronicle sports editor suspended for plagiarism
Chronicle Sports Editor Tim Haas was suspended without pay Thursday for plagiarism.
Chronicle editors learned Thursday that Haas' Oct. 22 column, "UND alum says keep Bison-Sioux rivalry alive," was largely taken from a column written by Jeff Kolpak that ran in the Fargo (N.D.) Forum on Oct. 17.
Plagiarism is the act of knowingly taking ideas or words from another person and passing them off as one's own.
"The Chronicle deplores, and has strict policies concerning, plagiarism," Managing Editor Bill Wilke said. "We are hoping to use this experience as an opportunity to let staff know we have zero tolerance for plagiarism."
It is a fundamental ethic of journalism that all information be attributed to its source and that sources be clearly identified and credited.
Haas apologized Thursday and said, "Ignorance is no excuse for breaking the rules."
