Schiavo is not brain dead, in a coma or vegetative state
In response to John Foster's (March 2) letter, I wonder who really is ignorant? I wonder how Mr. Foster would feel if someone decided to starve him to death? Maybe he doesn't realize that medical experts agree that death by starvation and dehydration is perhaps one of the most painful, agonizing, tortuous ways to die. In fact, in some states it is against the law to let your pet starve to death!
Terri Schiavo has a feeding tube because her brain injury prevents her from being able to swallow. She is not brain dead, she is not in a coma, she is not in a persistent vegetative state, she is not on life support!
I know of a young man in the state of Montana who had a traumatic brain injury. A doctor in Butte wanted to kill him off by taking away his feeding tube -- taking away his food and water -- but his family and friends did not allow this to happen. This young man is talking, laughing -- alive -- today because someone stepped up to the plate for him. Let's step up to the plate for Terri and others like her.
By the way, I challenge you to try fasting from food and water for a few days -- pretend you can't swallow or talk -- see if this could lead to "death with dignity."
