BREAKING NEWS: New fire prompts pre-evacuation notice

A new forest fire broke out in the Chestnut Mountain area near Trail Creek east of Bozeman late Wednesday afternoon. It had grown to about 25 acres and a stiff wind was blowing in the area as of 5:30 p.m.

The rapid growth prompted Gallatin County officials to issue a pre-evacuation notice to homeowners in the Trail Creek area.

No cause was immediately known for the fire, which was on the Gallatin County side of the drainage.

Because of the potential for damage and predictions of high winds, aerial tankers from Billings were ordered to drop retardant on the blaze.

The Trail Creek Road runs between Interstate 90 on the west side of Bozeman Pass and U.S. Highway 89 south of Livingston.
