Around Montana: Carson, Kountz place second in team roping
BILLINGS - Bozeman's Rob Kountz and Shepherd's Ross Carson combined to finish second in the team roping last weekend at the annual NILE Pro Rodeo at Metra Arena.
The rodeo is the first event on the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association Montana Circuit's 2008 season.
Kountz and Carson clocked 6.7 seconds to finish fourth in the first go-round and 6.5 seconds to place third in the second go-round. Their average on three head was 19.5 seconds. Riley and Brady Minor, of Ellensburg, Wash., topped the aggregate with a combined time of 19 seconds.
Huntley's Brady Tryan and Helena's Chase Tryan, a Montana State freshman, finished second in the short round in 5.4 seconds.
Four local cowboys earned paychecks in the steer wrestling, though none placed in the average. Whitehall's Shawn Dunagan and Belgrade's Mark Radue tied for second in the first go-round in 3.9 seconds, and Kountz tied for sixth in 4.1 seconds. The winning time was 3.5 seconds. Bozeman's Curt LaDuke finished fifth in the second go-round in 4.1 seconds. The winning time was 3.6 seconds.
Joey Bell Jr., of Malakoff, Texas, won the short round and the average (12 seconds on three head).
The other average winners were: Jerrad Hofstetter, of Portales, N.M., 26.2 seconds in tie down roping; Billy Wall, of Morgan, Utah, in the bareback riding (169 points on two head); Jeff Willert, of Belvidere, S.D., in the saddle bronc (163 points); Jesse Bail, of Camp Crook. S.D., in the bull riding (151 points); and, Lisa Lockhart, of Oelrichs, S.D., in barrel racing (27.76 seconds on two runs).
The Montana Circuit Finals for the 2007 season are scheduled Jan. 11-13 at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls.
