Running: Huffing for Stuffing race draws a crowd
The huffing - the frozen breath of nearly 1,000 runners - could be seen a mile away. The stuffing? All you had to do was check the heated tent for that.
DEIRDRE EITEL/CHRONICLE
Dan Nagel rounds the corner onto Ellis Street Thursday morning near the start of the Huffing for Stuffing run. About 1,000 people participated in the event which raised money for the Gallatin Valley Food Bank.
Bozeman's inaugural Thanksgiving Day road race was dubbed “Huffing for Stuffing,” but when single-digit temperatures became the order of the day, a more appropriate moniker may have been g-g-g-gobbling for gravy.
Icy streets and dripping noses weren't enough to stop a large wave of runners and walkers - some in costume, most wearing ski outfits - who showed up to build an appetite for the afternoon's feast and to help out those in need.
A children's 1-kilometer fun run began the day while the sun was rising above a parking lot behind Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. The 5 and 10K races were next, including courses that sent participants crisscrossing Highland Avenue before finishing back at the parking lot, where a large, white - and warm - tent awaited.
With so many people “stuffed” into the tent, it actually felt comfortable inside while the crowd waited for muffins, fruit and a welcome cup of hot chocolate.
“It reminded me of a frat party because you couldn't get through,” race founder and director John Dudas said.
When the morning concluded, 540 pounds of food was donated to go with the $1,000 that was raised for Gallatin Valley Food Bank, the race's benefactor. A portion of the race's proceeds will also go to the food bank.
There were 931 runners registered for the 5 and 10K races, and most sported long pants, although a few - including female 5K winner Heidi Turner and Bozeman road racing staple Leonard Baluski - ran in shorts.
Those who dressed up for the occasion included Court Smith and Katherine Falcioni, who were decked out as pilgrims, making the best out of cardboard and duct tape. They also wore period hats and long, black coats.
Falcioni echoed what most were thinking when she said, “It was a wonderful community event. It speaks well for Bozeman.”
When the morning began, the generators that fueled the tent and the hot chocolate failed. Fortunately, the food bank's Tim Trzinski was able to get them going.
Then, an unexpected crowd of race-day registrants appeared, causing the longer races to start 15 minutes late.
It was an overwhelming beginning for Dudas, who was organizing a race for the first time.
“We thought 600 (runners) would be a good day,” he said. “It was inspiring. The community really cares.”
Aside from those who dressed up, there were groups of runners who made the race their own special event.
Lisa Patrick brought 10 young runners - all girls - from the “She Can!” running club in Livingston. The club of first-through-fifth graders trains twice a week for six weeks prior to each race.
“We had a great time,” Patrick said of her charges, who all wore green T-shirts. “The girls were cold, but they had a great time.”
One of the She Can! crew, Althea Tapley, who ran the 5K, summed up the morning thusly:
“It was cold, but it was fun,” the 9-year-old said through rosy cheeks.
Orange T-shirts were the rule for a collection of nine runners from a ranch in Wilsall. Sherry Nicholas explained the reason for coming over for the race.
Her daughter, Andrea, is running the Las Vegas Marathon on Dec. 2 and decided to use the 10K as a taper run. Mother and daughter brought seven others from Wilsall, all wearing “Struttin' R Stuffin'” on the back of their shirts.
While waiting in the long food line, Nicholas was asked if she was surprised at the large turnout.
“No,” she said. “We're in Montana. I knew it would be like this.”
Other than the warming tent, the biggest attraction was the costumed turkey - a.k.a. local Pastor Dan Nagel.
Nagel ran the 5K and did his best to best the field, finishing well ahead of much of the pack. Those who did finish ahead of him received a water bottle with the words “I Smoked the Turkey” on the side.
Few bottles were given away, however. The 6-foot-2 Nagel, heavy turkey suit and all, finished 19th out of 647 runners.
Huffing all the way.
