Slyvan Pass opens, closes, opens again
The road over Sylvan Pass in Yellowstone National Park will be reopened today after being closed one day because of avalanche dangers, the National Park Service announced Thursday.
Sylvan Pass leads to the park's east entrance, near Cody, Wyo., and is the least-used route during the winter travel season.
At one time, the Park Service had planned to close it during winters, due to avalanche dangers both for staff and visitors. After a row with Wyoming businesses and politicians, the agency later decided to leave it open as conditions allow.
This year, the conditions forced a closure Wednesday evening, the same day the park opened for winter use.
Park workers have since “concluded avalanche-hazard mitigation operations and groomed the East Entrance Road for motorized oversnow travel,” the Park Service announced late Thursday.
