Bozeman named among top 20 cities in West

American Cowboy has named Bozeman one of the top 20 places to live in the West.

Bozeman was one of two Montana cities that made the magazine’s first annual list, unveiled this week in its April-May issue. Missoula, and out-of-state cities such as Bend, Ore., and Steamboat Springs, Colo., also received the honor.

Bozeman also has been named as one of the best small towns and best places to retire.

Montana State University rodeo coach Mike True said part of Bozeman’s appeal might be its mix of traditional and modern western, with amenities ranging from historic Yellowstone National Park to new-aged horseback adventures.

“From the perspective of a rodeo guy, Bozeman has all that history with the college national finals being here for 30 years,” True said.

American Cowboy’s selections were based on criteria for what makes a Western community: authentic cowboy culture and charm; a healthy respect for history and heritage; abundant recreational activities and a strong sense of community coupled with a free-spirited, rugged independence.

The 20 cities chosen by the magazine embody the magic and spirit that is the great American West, publisher Bill Garrels stated in a news release.

“Whether you’re looking for a new place to settle or the perfect place to vacation, these communities deliver top value in the form of adventure, culture, charm, natural beauty and unspoiled wilderness, and frontier history and tradition,” Garrels stated.

" I highly doubt this will be the case in another 5 years. I have lived outside Bozeman for the last 4 years and in that time Bozeman has turned into Bozangles. It is a proven fact that with the immigrants, comes crime, trash and just overall "it don't matter" attitude. That is NOT the attitude that has made Bozeman what it was a few years ago... It is very sad... very sad... "

" Bozeman will always have the physical attributes that helped it to be named one of the best places to visit, live, retire, etc. As beautiful and vibrant as Bozeman is, growth is inevitable. The problem is that most people who relocate are in some capacity trying to escape from something, but end up trying to change their surrounding to mirror what they know, i.e., what they just left.
Growth itself is not a bad thing, and can be a very good thing. The associated problems that can and most likely will arise speak much more to the moral, social and behavioral decline that permeate our entire society. "

" Maybe the "immigrants" and all their crime and trash will at least drive lingering racists like mntnvew to whiter pastures (if that's possible). And hopefully they'll take the locals who are looting cars and robbing banks with them. I think it would be a good trade. "
