Hawks win dual with Butte

The Bozeman High School track and field team defeated Butte on Thursday at Van Winkle Stadium.

DEIRDRE EITEL/CHRONICLE Bozeman High’s Amber Whitmire gets Courtney Gopp of Billings Senior out on first base during Thursday afternoon’s home game.
The varsity girls team earned an extra five points to pull ahead of the Bulldogs 75-70.

Heidi Turner won the mile run in 5 minutes, 12 seconds in what Bozeman coach John Griffith called, “probably the highlight of the meet.”

Megan Davis won the 400-meter sprint and took second in the 200, only two hundredths of a second of her personal best time.

Coriann Clark, returning from a hip injury she suffered a week ago, took first place in the javelin. Clark also won the 300 hurdles.

Carly Drain paced a 1-2 sweep for Bozeman in the 300 hurdles, winning in 48 seconds. Griffith said he hopes Clark’s and Drain’s strong performances will translate into high places and points at the divisional meet next Friday.

Chip Goodrich ran two personal best times: an 11-second 100-meter sprint and a 22.6-second 200. Matt Francis also ran a personal best in the mile, but in Thursday’s tough competition it only earned him third place.

James Cole, who announced this week that he will attend the United States Air Force Academy, won both the shot put and the discus.

The Bozeman boys defeated Butte 91-54.

“It was good competition,” said Griffith, “a lot of people stepped up.”

After next week’s divisional meet in Billings, the state competition will be held in Helena May 23-24.

Complete results and times were unavailable Thursday night due to a computer malfunction at the track.

Other team scores: Bozeman JV girls 76, Butte 65; Bozeman JV boys 93, Butte 42.

PARK HIGH BLANKS HARDIN: At Livingston, a big third inning carried the Park High Rangers’ softball team to an 8-0 victory over Hardin on Thursday.

The Rangers’ Steph Davaz started the game with a triple on her way to going 4-for-4 from the plate.

In the third inning, the Rangers’ offense racked up seven hits and seven runs with Jo Chapel hitting a double.

Park High’s defense was not flawless, but it kept the Bulldogs from scoring and allowed only two hits.

The Rangers will head to Butte for a weekend tournament that begins today.
