Shows wins, locals excel

HELENA - Bryce Shows showed what was possible in Class B could also be done in Class C. The Ennis senior won both middle-distance state titles on the same day and he gave himself the opportunity for more today.

Shows led the Mustang boys to second place, two points behind Sheridan at the midpoint of Class AA-C track and field state meet at Helena’s water-logged Vigilante Stadium on Friday.

Shows finished the day with wins in the 400 and 800 meter runs as well as qualifying in the 100 and 200 dashes. Shows will also race in the sprint finals and the relays today at 9 a.m.

Meanwhile, Bozeman kept itself in the running as James Cole and Kirsten Tilleman finished first and second (Tilleman breaking a school record with a throw of 40 feet, 1Ό inches) in the Class AA shot put. Hawks distance runners Alex Brekke and Heidi Turner came in first and second in the 3,200 and 1,600 runs.

Gardiner’s Ford Smith and Harrison’s Shannon Young came in first and second in the Class C distance races.

Shows completed his marathon day qualifying for the 200, running the last heat at 4 p.m. He was already plenty tired by the final straightaway on his 400 by mid-afternoon.

“At least, I think it’s fun. Every stride on the last 120 meters, I was just telling myself, ‘heart.’ Over and over: ‘Heart.’” Shows said about his reserve of energy. He is signed to run for Montana State University next year. “I just go.”

Shows had won the 400 and the 800 last year in Class B before Ennis moved to Class C at the beginning of this season.

Also scoring points for the Mustangs was Taylor McNally, who won the girls shot put while Courtney Severeid finished third in the javelin. Gavin Owens finished sixth in the 3,200 with a time 10 minutes, 29.17 seconds..

“It’s state,” Shows said. “Everybody’s just got to step it up.”

In the Class AA team competition, Billings West’s near-invincible boys team jumped to a 32-point lead while its girls team finished Day 1 in a dead-heat with Missoula Big Sky. Bozeman’s teams finished in fourth, well within striking distance of the third-place Butte girls and Skyview boys.

Bozeman coach John Griffith gave his boys the benefit of the doubt in the race for second behind West. A particularly strong day for Missoula Big Sky’s girls may have opened the door for Bozeman.

“I know a lot of points are coming in tomorrow,” Brekke said after his 9:38 finish in the 3,200 run. “We’ve got a lot of kids in the (1,600).”

Brekke will also be the favorite in that event, leading a group of four Hawks. His best 1,600 is over four seconds faster than the next fastest Class AA time this year. The 2007 state cross country champion overcame a broken foot in the fall, but the old injury wasn’t a factor on Friday.

“I just try to stay the same n set a pace and try to match it as long as I can,” he said. “Effort-wise, it starts out pretty easy and at the end you feel like you’re kicking all out but you’re not going any faster.”

Gardiner’s Smith took an early lead and finished six seconds ahead of Joliet’s Ryan Ketterling, who had defeated Smith in last year’s state competition.

“My plan was just to draft him,” Smith said “When I saw him come around the corner behind me (on the last leg) and I thought ‘he’s fast. If he catches me, it’s over.’”

Gardiner’s long jumper Mary Cote finished third in the state title event after enjoying the best distance in the state for most of the season.

“You can’t jump well every day,” Cote said. “I guess the rain just really affected me.”

For Bozeman’s Cole, the rain didn’t make the throwing ring slick as he threw for the title and a new personal best by over a foot.

“I knew I was going to do pretty well this year because a lot of the best guys had graduated,” he said. “But you can never expect it because young kids can come up and have a great day.”

His teammate, Tilleman, on the other hand, had been a jumper and took up the shot two months ago while her knees healed from surgery in the fall. The future Oregon State basketball player competes today in the triple jump, in which she has won two state titles, and discus.

“Anything we asked her to do, she would automatically say yes to,” Griffith said. “Whatever she could do to help out the team.”

Other key points for Bozeman came from Coriann Clark who placed fifth in the javelin and sixth in the 300 hurdles. Meagan Davis finished third in the long jump, where freshman T.J. Leep was sixth on the boys side. Kelsey Ham came back from recurring injury and Chip Goodrich shook off a lingering case of the flu as both finished fourth in the 400.

Given those numbers and Big Sky’s Day 1 lead, the stars seemed to have aligned for Griffith’s best-case scenario in today’s title race with Billings West girls team.

“This might actually help us,” he said. “It could be a four-way race coming down from tomorrow. We’re hoping. Some big points in the discus and the 32. We got a shot. We’ll be a lot closer.”
