Sweet Pea still seeking festival volunteers

Organizers of Bozeman’s annual Sweet Pea Festival are still in need of help to make this year’s event a success.

The festival is all volunteer-run, and the organizers could still use a hand with everything from children’s activities to merchandising.

Those interested in helping can visit the festival Web site, www.sweetpeafestival.org, for more information and for a volunteer application form. Volunteers also can call the Sweet Pea office at 406-586-4003.

Emergency teams rescue injured lone hiker

A 54-year-old Big Sky woman hiking alone on the Lava Lake Trail slipped on a rock and injured her leg around 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to a written statement released Wednesday by the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman was unable to walk but was found moments after the fall by two men who were hiking the same trail. One of the men stayed with the victim while the other returned to the trailhead and drove to a phone to call for help.

A Gallatin County Sheriff’s deputy responded and coordinated the rescue with members of the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Big Sky Division, who brought the woman out to members of the Big Sky Fire Department.

She was taken by ambulance to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital where she was treated for a broken leg.

One Book-One Bozeman launches Web site

The committee organizing Bozeman’s inaugural community read, called One Book-One Bozeman, has launched a Web site for the project.

The site defines the project as an effort to promote community building and literacy through the reading of a common book. The book chosen for the community read is “Mountains Beyond Mountains.” Written by Tracy Kidder, the New York Times bestseller tells the story of Paul Farmer, a physician who has devoted his life to providing health care in the poorest regions of Haiti.

The Web site, www.onebookonebozeman.org, also lists some of the events the committee is planning as part of the project, which kicks off at the end of August. Among the events are a charity music night, a photo exhibit at the Bozeman Public Library, a children’s Haitian art project, health care panels and a Caribbean cooking class.

The project is funded in part by a grant from Humanities Montana, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Other supporters and organizers include the Library, the Bozeman Public Library Foundation, Hopa Mountain, Montana State University, Yellowstone Public Radio and the Children’s Museum.

Streets near MSU to be closed Saturday

A contractor for Montana State University will be chip-sealing 11th Avenue, Grant Street and Seventh Avenue beginning Saturday, July 26.

The project will affect Seventh from Kagy Boulevard to Grant Street; Grant Street from South Sixth to 13th Avenue; and South 11th Avenue from Lincoln to College streets.

Those streets will be temporarily closed starting Saturday morning. If the weather cooperates, the work might be completed that day and the streets reopened, but some work could continue into Sunday, July 27.

The contractor will open individual street areas as the work is completed.
