MSU Alumni tailgate is today at Bobcat Stadium


The MSU Alumni Association is hosting a free tailgate party for all members at 11 a.m. today.

Non-members are also welcome with a small donation.

The association’s tailgate area is a large white tent in front of the Bobcat Stadium sign, on Kagy Boulevard.

Highway Patrol conducting spot check today

The Montana Highway Patrol will be conducting a safety spot check in Gallatin County today for the Labor Day weekend.

The spot check on state highways will verify that motorists have a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration and insurance. The spot check may be conducted day or night; the exact location will not be announced.

Bozeman Trail Road to close Wednesday

On Wednesday, Sept. 3, Bozeman Trail Road will be closed from the frontage road south through to Fort Ellis Road for widening and repaving.

Work is expected to be completed by Oct. 3. All motorists should use alternate routes.

Suicide prevention group will meet first Thursdays

Suicide Loss Saving Lives is a new group offering support to survivors of suicide, those who have lost a loved one to suicide.

The group will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital’s conference room, physicians dining room, just off the cafeteria. Focus will be on awareness of suicide dynamics, education and prevention.

Regular meetings will be the first Thursday of each month.

Book handout day for Bozeman first graders

All Bozeman first-graders will receive a free book on Friday, Sept. 5 as part of the Bozeman School Foundation’s effort to encourage reading.

This year’s book is “Beatrice’s Goat” written by Page McBrier and illustrated by Lori Lohstoeter. Based on a true story, it tells about a girl in Uganda whose family receives a goat from the nonprofit Heifer Project International. It demonstrates how little it takes to bring hope and change to developing countries.

The Foundation, which raises money to support the Bozeman public schools, will also distribute a pamphlets to first-graders and their families on the importance of reading, called “What’s the most powerful thing you can do to make sure you child succeeds in school?”

Co-sponsors of the event are the Country Bookshelf, Mary Jane DiSanti and Darrell Bowman.

Public meetings set for proposed electric transmission line

The public is invited to attend any of three meetings on NorthWestern Energy’s plan to build and operate a new 500 kV electric transmission line across Southwestern Montana.

.   The Mountain States Transmission Intertie, or MSTI, Project would involve a 390- to 430-mile-long power line over private, state and federal land in Montana and southeastern Idaho.

The Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and Montana Department of Environmental Quality are preparing an environmental impact statement to analyze the proposal.

Public meetings will take place at:

* Copper King Hotel, 4655 Harrison Avenue in Butte, on Sept. 9;

* Three Forks High School, 210 East Neal, Three Forks on Sept. 10;

* Matthews Hall at the University of Montana-Western, 710 S. Atlantic in Dillon on Sept. 11.

All meetings will be held between 7 and 9 p.m.

Child safety clinic set for Sept. 6

Cunningham’s ATA Martial Arts will offer a free child safety clinic at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at 2622 W. Main St., across from the Gallatin Valley Mall.

Designed to help prevent child abductions and assaults, the two-hour seminar is geared toward children ages 5 to 12 and their parents. Advance registration is required.

Detective Mary Ann Rangitsch, a member of the Bozeman Police Department’s “Crimes Against Children Task Force,” will be available to answer questions.

The clinic is part of the martial arts school’s grand re-opening event at its new location. Other free demonstrations and clinics include choreographed martial arts forms, weapons demonstrations, board-breaking and sparring. General events run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
