Around Montana: QBs in shootout in LaGrande share Frontier honors
BILLINGS - Quarterbacks Chris Ware of Eastern Oregon and Kasey Peters of Rocky Mountain share the Frontier Conference offensive player of the week award after a 131-point game over the weekend.
Ware, a freshman from Rainier, Ore., completed 23 of 35 passes for 443 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 114 yards and three more scores in Eastern Oregon's 76-55 win over Rocky. Ware also was named the national player of the week by the NAIA and the Victory Sports Network.
Peters, a junior from Newport Beach, Calif., countered by completing 43 of 62 passes for 634 yards and seven touchdowns.
Montana State-Northern defensive back Khalin Anderson was named the league's defensive player of the week. The senior from Fort Benton had five solo tackles, an assisted tackle, two pass breakups and an interception in Northern's 31-9 win over Montana Western.
Eastern Oregon kicker and punter Thomas Akers was named the special teams player of the week. Akers, a junior from Vancouver, Wash., made 8-of-10 PATs and had six punts for 214 yards.
Golf
GILLUM SHOOTS LOW ROUND FOR MSU: Montana State golfer Kelly Gillum leads the MSU pack at the Heather Farr Memorial Invite hosted by Colorado University. Gillum scored a 77-73 on the first 36 holes of the tournament that features 10 golfers under par after the first day. The University of Notre Dame is in first place at five-under par followed by host Colorado at one-over par.
“I’m real happy with Kelly’s play and the play of our freshman Leslie McGetrick,” head coach Leslie Spalding said.
McGetrick shot an 80-75 in her second collegiate outing. The event concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes.

Basketball
MSU-BILLINGS WOMEN SIGN TWO RECRUITS: At Billings, Montana State-Billings women's basketball coach Kevin Woodin has announced the signing of two players. Signing with the Lady Yellowjackets are Laura Jo Kipp of Browning and Melissa Porter of Redmond, Utah.
Kipp, a 6-foot freshman, averaged 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists per game as a senior at Browning High School in 2002.
Porter is a 6-3 freshman and three-time all-state player at North Sevier High School. She helped her team win a state championship as a sophomore. She is a member of the MSU-Billings volleyball team.
Woodin says the players will provide the team with depth and talent at the post position.
Triathlon
BOZEMAN CLUB WINS CHAMPIONSHIP: The Bozeman Tritons won the USA Triathlon Pacific Northwest Championships in their first year as an official USAT club.
The team took first place, in the top division, beating out triathlon clubs in major metropolitan areas like Seattle, Portland, Honolulu, Anchorage, Spokane and Boise.
The regional championship includes a $750 cash award, which the Bozeman Triathlon Club intends to put to use enhancing its program.
To take the championship crown, the Bozeman Triathlon Club recruited thirty-one new USA Triathlon members. Total Triton membership now stands at 44.
The Tritons are currently commencing off season training. The club welcomes adults, MSU students, and athletes of all ages and abilities. Additional information is available at www.bozemantritons.org.
Soccer
BOZEMAN TEAMS COMPETE AT JACKSON HOLE TOURNAMENT: At Jackson Hole, Wyo., several Bozeman Blitzz teams attended the fourth annual Jackson Hole Fall Classic soccer tournament, Sept. 27-28.
The boys U14 team played to the championship game, losing to the Avalanche 6-1. Henry Hietala scored the team’s goal for their second-place effort.
The boys U13 team was 1-3 on the weekend, with Jason Holmes scoring three goals.
The Bozeman Blitzz U12 girls sent two teams to Jackson. The blue team played into the consolation game, settling for a tie with Lander, Wyo., 1-1.
The Blitzz white team took second place, falling to Pocatello 3-2 in the championship game.
