LAS VEGAS n A women’s team from Bozeman representing the USTA Intermountain Section, finished third at the USTA League presented by Chrysler 2.5 Adult National Championships held at the Amanda & Stacy Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
Bozeman defeated a team from Guaynabo, P.R., 2-1, in the Third Place match. Earlier in the day, the the team lost to a team from Havehill, Mass., 2-1, in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
The team is captained by Dymra R. Williams and features Brittany Jean Basye, Ange Rene Hilsendeger, Lori Faure, Melissa Ross and Tracy Willard and plays at Montana State University.
The top four teams in order of finish are: Haverhill (New England), Pensacola (Florida), Bozeman (Intermountain) and Guaynabo, P.R. (Caribbean).
This year’s USTA League presented by Chrysler 2.5 Adult National Championship has drawn the top 29 teams, 12 men’s and 17 women’s, from throughout the nation.
The USTA League program celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2005. Established in 1980, it has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year, to over 665,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.

CARROLL’S KOEPPEN EARNS NATIONAL HONOR: At Helena, Carroll College linebacker Owen Koeppen was named Victory Sports Network defensive player of the week.
The senior from Florence had four solo tackles and two tackle assists in the Saints 48-10 victory over Eastern Oregon. Koeppen also snagged two interceptions which he returned for a total of 56 yards in the game. His interception in the third quarter set up a two play, 40 yard touchdown drive by the Saints. Carroll College is 5-0 and plays at home this week against Montana Western.
Cycling
LOCALS FINISH STRONG AT CYCLOCROSS OMNIUM: Bozeman bike racers excelled this past weekend at the MT Velo Cyclocross Omnium in Helena, filling both the racing fields as well as the podiums. G.A.S./Intrinsik's John Curry, racing in the premiere Men's category 1/2/3 field, took first overall with wins in the hill climb and cyclocross race and 3rd in the dirt criterium. His teammate Brad Morgan won the dirt criterium in dominant fashion, going solo off the front for more than half of the race.
In his first cyclocross race, G.A.S./Intrinsik's Jason Delmue took 3rd in the Men's cat 4 cross race and 1st in the dirt crit. On the women's side, Amy Frykman, of Team Delphine, won the women's cat 4 overall by winning all three events. In the top women's field, category 1/2/3, Lisa Curry of G.A.S./Intrinsik earned second overall with three second-place finishes in the component events.
Also sweeping the three events in his field was Bill Cochran, of Bozeman's Masters' Velo, in the Men's Master A category.
Basketball
HOOPFEST SLATED FOR LATE OCTOBER: The Bozeman Fall Ball 5-on-5 Hoopfest will be held Friday, Oct. 31-Sunday, Nov. 2 at Bozeman Senior High School.
A minimum of four games are guaranteed and there are divisions for boys and girls grades 6-8.

JOHNSON PLACES SIXTH AT XTERRA NATIONALS: At Incline Village, Nev., Bozeman’s Harry Johnson finished 119th and sixth in his age group at the Xterra Off-Road Triathlon Nationals on Sunday.
Special Olympics
BELGRADE’S STILES HONORED AT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE: Special Olympics Montana recently honored recipients of the prestigious statewide Distinguished Service Awards during its annual Fall Leadership Conference September 19n21 in Great Falls. Individuals, organizations and businesses from across the state were recognized for their outstanding contributions to Special Olympics Montana.
Peggy Stiles of Belgrade has been awarded the 2008 Spirit of Special Olympics Award by Special Olympics Montana. The award is reserved for an individual volunteer who, through his or her long term commitment to Special Olympics Montana, best exemplifies the dedication and unselfish efforts associated with the true spirit of Special Olympics.
The recipients were nominated statewide by volunteers, coaches, sponsors, families and supporters of Special Olympics Montana and selected by a committee representing the organization’s various constituents such as athletes, coaches, Board of Directors, families, Area Directors and staff. More than 250 guests assembled at the Great Falls International Airport’s Panorama Room to celebrate the spirit of Special Olympics with a 1968 dinner theme, honoring 40 years of Special Olympics, and recognition of the award recipients.
