KidsLINK rally at Irving to support after-school programs

The Greater Gallatin United Way kidsLINK programs will hold a rally on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Irving Elementary School in Bozeman to support after-school programs.

It will be one of more than 7,500 such events around the nation.

The rally will highlight the contributions that after-school programs make to keeping kids safe and healthy, inspiring them to learn, and relieving working parents of worries about their children's safety. It will address the importance that every child who needs a program should have access to one. Some children will tell why after-school is important to them. The featured speaker will be Miss Montana, Jennifer Hepner, 23, a University of Montana student.

United Way started the kidsLINK after-school program in 1998 in Three Forks. It has grown to 19 sites serving more than 700 children regularly. In 2007, through a partnership with Bozeman School District, kidsLINK was awarded a grant for $435,000. The 20th local after-school program will begin operation at Belgrade Intermediate School around Nov. 1.

Funded by community donations to United Way, parent fees, the Gilhousen Family Foundation, Gallatin County 4-H, Mountain Sky Guest Ranch, G.C. Waite Foundation, and Barnard Companies, this initiative is the largest in Montana. Greater Gallatin United Way provides funding, curriculum, evaluations, and administrative oversight.
