Snowmobiler rescued near West Yellowstone
A 47-year-old California woman who hit a tree while snowmobiling near West Yellowstone this week was rescued by search-and-rescue crew and flown to a hospital in Idaho Falls.
The unidentified woman, who was from Sunnyvale, Calif., apparently ran off a trail eight miles south of West Yellowstone on the South Plateau Trail at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to Gallatin County Sheriff Jim Cashell.
The accident was reported to the West Yellowstone Police Department and six members of the West Yellowstone division of Gallatin County Search and Rescue were sent to help, Cashell said.
After finding the woman and diagnosing head injuries, the crew called for a helicopter from Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls .Several crew members then got her safely strapped into a rescue sled, while others set up a landing zone for the helicopter.
She was then flown to the hospital. Details on her condition were not available Friday.
“Winter recreation travel can be hazardous,” Cashell said in a prepared statement. “Wearing all appropriate safety equipment, including helmets, can save your life.”
