Mercury toxicity education topic of salon party
Area women are invited to a “salon party” devoted to education about mercury toxicity and the threat of mercury in household thermostats. The event will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at 49 Sunlight Ave., Bozeman.
Women will learn about the harmful effects of mercury on human health and the environment, and what they can do to support local efforts to reduce mercury pollution.
Those attending may test their own mercury exposure by snipping off hair samples that will be analyzed for mercury contamination.
The parties are jointly organized by Women’s Voices for the Earth, a national environmental health organization based in Missoula; Rebecca Baril is the local party host.
Today’s gym day at Willson cancelled
Gym Day in Bozeman, sponsored by the Parent Place, is cancelled for Thursday, Jan. 15, due to a conflict at Willson Gym. The event will resume the following week.

Bozeman High student talks about UN student conference tonight
Bozeman High School student Nikole Drummond will talk about her participation in the 11th annual United Nations Student Conference on Human Rights, which took place Dec. 3-5 at the U.N. headquarters in New York.
Drummond’s presentation will be from 6 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Bozeman City Library’s community room. It is free and open to the general public.

Auditions for ‘The Diviners’ continue this evening
Auditions for the Montana State University production of “The Diviners” will continue tonight, Thursday, Jan. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Black Box Theater, MSU on the corner of 11th and Grant.
Casting will include parts for six males and five females, teen to middle age.
“The Diviner” is set in rural Indiana in the early 1930s. The story centers on a 14-year-old boy who has a gift for divining, discovering underground sources of water, and a preacher questioning his faith.
Performances are set for Friday and Saturday evenings from Feb. 20 through March 7, in the Black Box Theater. Tom Watson of the media and theater arts department at MSU will direct.
Grazing-land management workshop Tuesday
A free grazing land management workshop will be offered Tuesday, Jan. 20, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the conference room of the USDA building, 3710 Fallon St., Bozeman. Registration begins at 9 a.m.
Rangeland management specialist Matt Ricketts will provide information on increasing ranch profitability, decreasing weeds, protecting rangelands against weeds and drought, range livestock nutrition, and common range plants including some that are poisonous to livestock.
Dennis Hengel, coordinator for the Gallatin County Weed District, will discuss herbicide labels, proper mixing, calibration of equipment, selecting an appropriate herbicide for the target weed, and winterization and storage of spray equipment.
Registration is limited to livestock producers in Gallatin County; call 522-4018, and provide your name, telephone number, and the number of people attending with you.
The workshop is sponsored by the Bozeman field office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Gallatin Conservation District.
Free, guided snowshoe hike on Saturday
The Montana Wilderness Association is holding a free, guided snowshoe hike on Saturday, Jan. 17, up the Middle Fork of Bracket Creek.
Anyone is welcome and no skill is required. MWA will supply snowshoes. The moderate hike, 4 to 6.25 miles, offers spectacular views of the Bridger Range and magnificent spots for lunch. The hike is open to up to 15 people. The group will meet at 8:15 a.m. at Wal-Mart northwest parking lot. To register for the hike, call leaders Roger Jenkins and Susie McDonald, 585-5338.
