Special Report - Kiersa

One child’s battle: searching for care
Kiersa’s story: Last September, Kiersa Jacobs, 3, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a bone and soft-tissue cancer rarely found in children so young.

Juggling the responsibilities
PORTLAND, Ore. - Sticking her fork into a soft-shell beef taco, Jill Jacobs drags out another shred of lettuce. Her daughter, Kiersa, a 3-year-old with Ewing’s sarcoma, has a meager appetite, a result of several rounds of chemotherapy.

Next steps for a toddler with fighting spirit
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Peddling her tricycle down the hospital hallway, Kiersa Jacobs yells, “Woo! Woo!” at the top of her lungs. It’s the only way she knows how to whistle. She is only 3.

Kids with cancer: standard of care
Cancer is doubly hard for children in Montana. Across the state, there are only two pediatric oncologists, and generally they only provide follow-up care.
